Understanding Tajweed

What is Tajweed and why does it matter?

Tajweed means "to do well" or "to make better." In the context of the Holy Quran, Tajweed refers to the set of rules that govern the correct pronunciation of Arabic letters and the proper recitation of Allah's words.

When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ received the Quran, it was revealed with Tajweed — with specific rules for how each Arabic letter should be pronounced, how long vowels are held, and how letters interact. Learning Tajweed means reciting the Quran correctly, as it was revealed, honouring every word of Allah Almighty.

Most students who have been reciting the Quran for years are making common mistakes without realising it. Our online Tajweed classes help you identify your own mistakes, correct them with expert guidance, and gain confidence in your recitation — InshaAllah.

Articulation Points (Makharij)

Every Arabic letter has a precise articulation point — the exact position in the mouth and throat from which it is correctly produced. Tajweed teaches you to recite each letter from its correct Makhraj, giving the Quran its distinctive, beautiful sound.

Characteristics of Letters (Sifaat)

Beyond articulation points, each Arabic letter has characteristics — qualities such as heaviness, lightness, elongation and softness — that determine how it sounds in recitation. Proper Tajweed brings these qualities to life in your reading.

Rules of Elongation (Madd)

Tajweed rules govern exactly how long vowel sounds are held in recitation. Learning the Madd rules ensures you recite Quranic verses at the correct rhythm and pace — a fundamental part of reciting the Quran beautifully.

What you will learn

The Tajweed rules covered in our online course

Our structured online Tajweed course covers all the essential rules of Tajweed in a logical, progressive sequence. From Arabic letters and articulation points through to advanced rules — our expert tutors guide you through every stage of learning Tajweed effectively.

مَخَارِجُ الْحُرُوف

Arabic Letters & Makharij

The foundation of Tajweed. Students master all Arabic letters, their articulation points, and correct pronunciation before progressing to rules of recitation.

أَحْكَامُ النُّون السَّاكِنَة

Noon Sakinah & Tanween Rules

The rules of Idgham, Ikhfa, Iqlab and Izhar — governing how the Noon Sakinah and Tanween interact with following Arabic letters in the Quran.

أَحْكَامُ الْمِيم السَّاكِنَة

Meem Sakinah Rules

The three rules governing Meem Sakinah — Ikhfa Shafawi, Idgham Shafawi and Izhar Shafawi — ensuring clear, correct pronunciation throughout recitation.

أَحْكَامُ الْمَدّ

Rules of Madd (Elongation)

Students learn all the Madd rules — natural, connected, separated and compulsory elongation — so every vowel sound is held for exactly the right duration when reciting Quran.

الْقَلْقَلَة

Qalqalah (Echo Sound)

The Qalqalah rule produces a distinct echo or bounce sound on five specific Arabic letters when they appear with Sukoon. Mastering Qalqalah adds a beautiful quality to Quranic recitation.

أَحْكَامُ الْوَقْف

Stopping & Starting (Waqf)

The rules of Waqf govern where and how to stop and start when reciting Quranic verses. Correct Waqf ensures the meaning of Allah's words is preserved in every recitation.
